Off-grid power
Your own power, no utility required
Solar and battery systems for homes, cabins, homesteads, and farms that run without a grid connection — or that want the option to. Designed and installed by a local team since 2008.
Off-grid system (without generator) — starting at $25,000

FranklinWH: whole-house backup that can go fully off-grid
A FranklinWH system can carry the whole house through a utility outage, and it is fully capable of running a home with no grid connection at all. Paired with solar, it stores the day’s production for the evening and night.
We size the battery and the array together, around how you actually use power — including short winter days in central Pennsylvania.
What goes into an off-grid system
- A solar array sized for year-round use, not just summer
- Battery storage with enough capacity to ride through cloudy stretches
- A look at your biggest loads — efficient ones, like super efficient heat pumps, let a smaller system go further
- A standby generator: you will need one to live in a house off-grid. If it is a cabin and not considered a residence, it is not required, but it is still highly recommended.
An off-grid system without the generator starts around $25,000. So far, in our experience, that has always been less than what the utility charges to bring power to a remote site — even sites only 700 feet from the power lines.
Going fully off-grid is a bigger commitment than grid-tied solar with a backup battery. For many homes, staying connected with whole-house battery backup gives the same outage protection. We’ll help you weigh both.
Off-grid case study
The right battery for the site
Not every off-grid home suits lithium. At Denise & Terry’s winterized homestead northeast of Snowshoe, temperatures drop below lithium’s comfortable range, so we replaced their failing lead-acid banks with maintenance-free nano-carbon batteries instead.
